The eagerly awaited first test of the 1997 series, the first Lions tour since the end of apartheid, finally kicked off in Cape Town following controversy surrounding a clash between James Small and John Bentley in the lead up to the fixture, and it did not disappoint. The Lions ran out winners of an enthralling game courtesy of tries from Allan Tait and a young Matt Dawson, who threw an audacious dummy that fooled a total of six South African players.
