When the Mid-Hants Railway put out an SOS to work a Daylight Railtour outing from Alton to Bridgnorth, Stanier class 5MT 45407 answered the call and presented the ex-Southern railwaymen with a fantastic opportunity to get to grips with what was considered to be the best mixed-traffic engine ever built in Britain. Green Arrow
This is the story of 60800 ”Green Arrow” and her heroic attempts to become the first V2-class locomotive to reach Plymouth. The original plan was for 60007 ”Sir Nigel Gresley” to make the trip, but when mechanical faults ruled the engine out, 60800 ”Green Arrow” came to the rescue. No one could have imagined the volcanic efforts that the big 2-6-2 engine would have to produce, particularly on the infamous Devon Banks, in order to reach her destination. Would she triumph and uphold the honour of the LNER in the West Country?
