All 13 episodes from the second season of the animated TV comedy show. The programme initially began as a radio show and later became a podcast series, finally being adapted into animation for the small-screen in 2010. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington discuss a variety of often ridiculous topics with frequently hilarious results. The episodes comprise: ‘Clive Warren’, ‘Doppelganger’, ‘The Fly’, ‘Onion’, ‘Insects’, ‘Kidneys’, ‘Night Club’, ‘Future’, ‘Natural History’, ‘Leg Rubber’, ‘Mrs. Battersby’, ‘Art’ and ‘Munchies’.
Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkingtons collection of podcasts earned them a massive fanbase, who would regularly download the latest adventures of the trio in equally large numbers. With few subjects off topic, they quickly became firm favourites. Then, someone had the idea of setting said podcasts to animation, and that became the basis for The Ricky Gervais Show.
It sounds like a gimmick at heart, especially when you consider that the audio has been available before in another form. But what makes The Ricky Gervais Show work is the sheer level of fun they have with the animation. Its frequently very funny, and the passages they choose to animate are very well selected. As a result of that, it draws far more fun out of the material, and works extremely well. Theres a real sense that something is being added to the material with the animated work, and thats no easy tricky to pull off.
That said, Gervaiss humour remains divisive, although if you enjoyed An Idiot Abroad youre likely to have a blast with The Ricky Gervais Show. For if you do warm to their comedy, then Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington are on real form here, and are as excellent a triple act as theyve ever been.
