Davis Guggenheim, director of Al Gore’s influential global warming documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, explores the pitfalls of the American public education system in this revealing political documentary. The film traces the stories of five children from under-privileged backgrounds whose parents are desperate to secure a decent education for them by getting them into one of the country’s sought-after high-performing charter schools. But admission to these schools is allocated by lottery, and the only alternative is a declining public education system that has fallen by the wayside and is characterised by failing schools and a poor standard of teaching.
