Collection of 1980s box-office successes. In ‘The Karate Kid’ (1984), Daniel (Ralph Macchio) arrives at his new school in California and soon finds himself bullied by a bunch of karate-trained creeps. Nevermind, help is on hand in the form of the school janitor (Pat Morita), a wise old martial arts instructor who trains Daniel to become a karate expert. This is lucky, because when the chief bully discovers that Daniel has taken up with his girlfriend, he’s not going to be very happy about it. In ‘Tootsie’ (1982), Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is an unemployed actor with a reputation for being ‘difficult’. Desperate for work, he dresses up in drag in an attempt to land a part in a daytime soap as a mature woman. He succeeds, and achieves instant fame as Dorothea Michaels. However, complications develop when he falls in love with Julie (Jessica Lange), a female cast member, while simultaneously having to fend off the amorous advances of both Julie’s father (Charles Durning) and male actors on the set. In ‘The Secret of My Success’ (1987), Brantley Foster (Michael J. Fox) comes to the big city from Kansas to work in the post room of his uncle’s multi-million dollar corporation. He uses his ingenuity to propel himself up the corporate ladder (in fact, he reads the mail to pick up corporate secrets). On his dramatic climb through the ranks he falls in love with a fellow executive (Helen Slater) who is having an affair with the boss. Meanwhile, the boss’s wife has taken a bit of a shine to young Brantley… In ‘Back to the Future’ (1985), teenager Marty McFly (Fox) just wants to play electric guitar and date girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells); he is also determined not to end up a loser in life like his own parents. Father George (Crispin Glover) is a weak-willed failure, bullied at work by his former high school tormentor Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson), while mother Lorraine (Lea Thompson) is an alcoholic. Marty’s friend and mentor is the eccentric Doctor Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who has successfully invented his own time machine in the form of a plutonium-powered Delorean sports car. However, after Marty travels thirty years back in time, he discovers that he doesn’t have enough fuel to return to 1985. And, after he accidentally prevents the first ever meeting between his own, teenage parents, Marty’s own future birth and present existence is placed in jeopardy! Finally, in ‘Police Academy’ (1984), a new mayor offers a motley crew of misfits the chance to oil the wheels of justice when he lifts the restrictions which normally apply when recruiting new members to the police force. The academy has the onerous task of knocking them into law-enforcing shape.
