Germany’s bombing campaign commenced on August 23 1940, with the Luftwaffe targeting British aircraft factories and airfields; however, the planes flew off course and nine civilians were killed. Britain responded with an attack on Berlin on the 25th, which so incensed Hitler that he ordered London razed to the ground.
