To travel along the Settle to Carlisle line is to experience one of the most wonderful train journeys of the world. Passing along England s wild Pennine backbone there is plenty to see and discover: not just scenery and steam trains but also rich heritage, castles and houses and the chance to see eagles and halks fly free. We begin our journey in the old market town of Settle in North Yorkshire, before heading up through Stainforth, Horton and Selside. We then continue our journey, passing through Ribblehead and take a look at the famous Riddlehead viaduct on the way into Dent, in Cumbria, the highest mainline station in England, where the viewa are truly spectacular. Next stop is Garsdale, before heading further North still to Aisgill, the highest point of the Settle to Carlisle line and the source of the River Eden, which we can now follow all the way to Carlisle. However there are still some fascinating stop-offs along the way as we drop in at Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, Langwathby, Alston, Lazonby and Armathwaite before we finally reach our destination, the historic border city of Carlisle.
