In ‘Lara Croft – Tomb Raider’ (2001) Jolie takes the role of the computer game explorer, with her real-life father (Jon Voight) playing Lara’s father, Lord Croft, who has recently died. Lara is a well-educated English aristocrat who has a secret life; she looks for lost antiquities and will use her highly-trained, fighting skills to get what she wants. When she comes up against an ancient organisation led by Powell (Iain Glen), Lara finds herself travelling across the globe and fighting mysterious creatures to get to an ancient relic before him; one that has immense powers.
In the sequel, ‘Lara Croft – Tomb Raider 2′ (2003) Lara is trying to recover the mysterious Pandora’s Box, before Ciaran Hinds, a maniacal scientist, can use it for his sinister plan to end the world. Lara needs some help, so she contacts her ex-partner Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler). Unsure if she can still trust Sheridan, Lara sets off on a globe-trotting adventure to foil Hinds’ evil plans.
‘Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow’ (2004) is a sci-fi action adventure paying homage to the comics and serials of the 1940s. Gwyneth Paltrow plays intrepid reporter Polly Perkins, who suspects a connection between the mysterious disappearance of many of the world’s top scientists, and a recent attack on New York City by giant robots. Deciding to investigate, she enlists the help of her former beau, heroic flying ace Joe ‘Sky Captain’ Sullivan (Jude Law). Helped by the dextrous Franky (Jolie) and technical whiz Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), the team uncover a plot by mad scientist Dr Totenkopf (Laurence Olivier in archive footage) to create a ‘World of Tomorrow’ – and destroy the world of today. A race against time begins as our heroes do all they can to save the planet before it is too late.
