In ‘The Last Samurai’ (2003), the Japanese monarchy has decided to replace the hired samurai warriors, who have been relied upon for centuries for defending the nation, with a more contemporary military. A U.S. Civil War veteran (Tom Cruise) is hired by the Emperor to train a group of Japanese conscripts to replace the samurai warriors. But when he is captured by the samurai, he comes to respect them and finds himself torn over who he should be fighting for. ‘Troy’ (2004) stars Brad Pitt as the muscle-bound Achilles. Set in 1193 BC, the film is based on Homer’s sprawling epic poem ‘The Iliad’. It tells the story of Paris, Prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom), who falls in love with the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta (Brendan Gleeson), the beautiful Helen (Diane Kruger). Alexander (Colin Farrell) was a man who had conquered 90% of the known world by the age of 27. He led his virtually invincible Greek and Macedonian armies through 22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years, and by the time of his death at the age of 32 had forged an empire unlike any the world had ever seen. The film chronicles Alexander’s path to becoming a living legend, from a youth fueled by dreams of myth, glory and adventure to his lonely death as a ruler of a vast Empire.
