Journey To The Republic

In 1865, just after the Civil War, the SS Republic set sail from New York for New Orleans. Loaded with much-needed supplies and a fortune in gold and silver coins, the side-wheel steamer was caught in a fierce hurricane off the coast of Georgia and sank nearly 1,700 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic. Once thought lost forever, the shipwreck was discovered 138 years later by Odyssey Marine Exploration, a unique deep-ocean shipwreck exploration company. Journey more than a quarter mile beneath the surface of the Atlantic to the SS Republic shipwreck site. Far below where any scuba diver can explore, fly over the site with ZEUS, Odyssey’s 8-ton remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
