Box set featuring three popular action adventure movies. ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ (2004) is a mega-budget, special-effects packed action adventure sci-fi epic directed by Roland Emmerich, in which global warming and the greenhouse effect have given rise to abrupt climate change – with cataclysmic consequences for the entire planet. Dennis Quaid stars as Professor Adrian Hall, a paleoclimatologist who is fighting to save the world from a second ice age and all the natural disasters that herald it: floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes to name but a few. But first, Hall must complete a more personal mission: his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is stranded in New York City where he was taking part in a school competition when the catastrophe began. As well as facing a perpetual onslaught of natural catastrophes, Hall must fight his way through the mass of humanity fleeing south into warmer climes… but can he reach his son in time to save him? ‘Flight of The Phoenix’ (2004) is based on the novel by Elleston Trevor and revolves around the plight of Captain Frank Towns (Quaid), a pilot whose C-119 cargo plane full of oil workers could not withstand the violent winds of a desert sandstorm. Stranded in the harsh terrain of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, Frank and his navigator face a challenge in maintaining order among the survivors. The group of oilmen had planned on an uneventful trip to shut off a group of rigs falling below their productivity expectations – not fending for their very lives. Before long, some men are revealed as cowards, while others exhibit a surprising show of strength, all the while hoping that the wreckage of the original plane can be salvaged. In ‘Volcano’ (1997), Mike Roark (Tommy Lee Jones), head of Los Angeles’ Office of Emergency Management, teams up with seismologist Dr Amy Barnes (Anne Heche) when an explosion underground kills some construction workers. It transpires that the building of a tunnel has sparked off volcanic activity beneath the city, and soon the streets of LA are flowing with lava. As the city plunges into chaos, Roark’s teenage daughter Kelly is caught up in the catastrophe.
