Three documentaries exploring the British experience of the Second World War. ‘The Blitz Years’ looks at 1939-1941, when Britain entered the war, was forced to evacuate from France, and suffered heavy German bombing attacks. Contemporary newsreel footage from Pathe News explores the spirit of the Home Front. ‘The Long Years’ convers the period from 1942-944, when Britain was joined by the USSR and the USA in a series of long and bloody engagements with the Germans across North Africa and on the Eastern Front. Home Front efforts are encouraged by newsreels and cinema. ‘The Victory Years’ looks at the momentous events of 1944-1945, when Britain adjusted to the presence of large numbers of American soldiers, and when the Allies launched their devastating invasion of German-occupied France. More terror attacks on British cities was yet to come, but victory soon followed in Europe and in the Far East against Japan.
