Operation Overdrive, the 13th spin-off series in the venerable Power Rangers franchise, retains the key elements that keep kids coming back to the show–elaborate battles between robots and monsters–with a serial-style spin involving the retrieval of jewels for an all-powerful object. Adventurer and scientist Andrew Hartford’s discovery of the Corona Aurora, a crown that bestows unlimited power upon its possessor, attracts the attention of two warring brothers–the ice creature Flurious and Moltor, a fire demon–who dispatch their hideous minions after its new owner. In response, Hartford assembles a team of five teens from various background (including his own son) and reworks their DNA to transform them into Power Rangers, who seek the five missing jewels that activate the crown’s powers.
The first six episodes of the series (including the two-part opener, “Kick It Into Overdrive”) cover the discovery of the crown, the assembling of the Rangers, and the search for the first jewel, which brings them to Atlantis (“The Underwater World”). As with all Power Rangers series, the action is the core of the show, and it’s plentiful but never particularly violent, and the elaborate array of exploratory vehicles operated by the Rangers will delight any younger viewer who’s just discovered the particular magic of heavy equipment.
