Zoya (Melissa Gilbert) was born of royal blood in turn of the century Russia, but her privileged life is shattered when the revolution takes her parents from her and she is forced to move to Paris to live with her grandmother. Suffering poverty and loneliness for many years, her life takes a turn for the better when she falls in love with Clayton Andrews (played by Gilbert’s real-life husband Bruce Boxleitner), who she marries and moves to New York with. However, her rollercoaster existence plummets once again during the great crash in 1929 – an incident that leads to tragedy.
