Five classic John Wayne films. ‘Angel and the Badman’ (1946) sees Wayne in the role of Quart Evans, ex-deputy sheriff of Wyatt Earp, and now a rough and ready gunslinger. After being injured in a shootout, Evans is taken in and nursed by a Quaker family. He finds himself falling for the daughter (Gail Russell), and attempts to give up gunslinging. However, a determination to bring a group of murderers to justice threatens his new-found peace of mind. In ‘Hell Town’ (1938), cowhand Dare Rudd (Wayne) is hooked on gambling, which earns him the disapproval of his socially-upstanding cousin Tom Fillmore (Johnny Mack Brown). In fact, Dare and Tom don’t see eye to eye on anything, and seem happy to keep out of each other’s way. But when Dare falls for Tom’s girl, things starts to get complicated. In the comedy ‘McLintock!’ (1963), cattle baron George Washington McLintock (Wayne) will stop at nothing to regain the affections of his estranged wife (Maureen O’Hara). ‘Sagebrush Trail’ (1933) sees John Brant (Wayne) escaping from his cell after being wrongly imprisoned on a murder charge. Brant joins a bunch of desperadoes in an attempt to find the true murderer – but a member of the gang is jealous of Wayne’s interest in a girl, and becomes increasingly suspicious that he might be a traitor. The romantic comedy ‘His Private Secretary’ (1933) stars Wayne as tearaway millionaire’s son Dick Wallace, who is forever chasing around after girls. When the playboy meets and falls in love with Marion Hall (Evalyn Knapp), the woman of his dreams, his father refuses to believe that she is anything more than a gold digger. Young Dick therefore makes an effort to change his ways, in the hope that he can convince his Pa this is the real thing.
