Triple box set featuring three popular period dramas. ‘An Ideal Husband’ (1999) is based on the play by Oscar Wilde. Rupert Everett stars as Lord Arthur Goring, a playboy who becomes embroiled in a scandal, both personal and political, when his best friend Sir Robert Chiltern MP (Jeremy Northam) is blackmailed by the devious Laura Chevely (Julianne Moore). Whilst attempting to aid his friend, Arthur becomes socially entangled with both Mabel Chiltern (Minnie Driver) and Laura, the latter enticing him with a tempting wager. The subsequent misunderstandings cause farcical repercussions to be felt around their entire social circle. ‘Tom Jones’ (1963) is the tale of the bawdy exploits of a rustic playboy Tom Jones (Albert Finney), a poor country boy who has a taste for wine, women and money. Whilst trying to create his own wealth, he sets his sights on Sophie (Susannah York). In ‘A Passage to India’ (1984), Judy Davis plays Miss Quested, a young English woman, recently arrived in India, who accuses the seemingly humble Dr Aziz (Victor Banerjee) of raping her during a trip to the Marabar caves. The subsequent trial lays bare the tensions which exist between the native population and the British colonialists, as well as the sexual repression which lurks under the surface of the polite society the British attempt to recreate on foreign soil.
