Profile of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, the first bomber with pressurised crew compartments, which was designed in 1940 to replace the B-17 and B-24. Following its maiden flight in September 1942 the B-29 was assigned to the Pacific arena, going into action against Japan in the last two months of 1944. In August 1945 it was the B-29s ‘Enola Gay’ and ‘Bock’s Car’ which dropped the first atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
