In ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (1991) a prince is turned into a hideous beast by a malevolent, magical spell, and finds that the only way out of his predicament is to win the love of the beautiful Belle. Belle agrees to come and stay at his home in exchange for the freedom of her father, whom the Beast had previously captured. At first she is repulsed by his hideous features, but as time passes she learns to recognise his true inner beauty. In the more recently filmed ‘Beauty and the Beast – The Enchanted Christmas’ (1997), Belle decides to fill the Beast’s castle with Christmas spirit even though the Beast doesn’t like the festive season. To attain her goal, Belle invites all the enchanted objects from the castle to help, and they sing and dance until the atmosphere is a truly joyous one.
