Triple bill featuring three classic war movies. In ‘Between Heaven and Heaven’ (1956), Sam Gifford (Robert Wagner) is an arrogant landowner in the Deep South. After he is drafted into the army his lack of humility falls foul of his sergeant (Broderick Crawford), who begins a mission to break his arrogant conscript. Gifford manages, however, to find inner-strength and humility after he rescues a fellow soldier (Buddy Ebsen) and begins to stand up to the vicious sergeant. In ‘Guadalcanal Diary’ (1943) is based on the best-selling book by Richard Tregaskis. The film creates a realistic, eye-witness account of U.S. Marines’ struggle to regain control of Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands from the Japanese. Preston S. Foster plays a chaplain attached to the unit, Lloyd Nolan plays the sergeant and William Bendix and Anthony Quinn play enlistees. The film also made a star out of former office-boy, Richard Jaeckel. In ‘To the Shores of Tripoli’ (1942), John Payne plays Chris Winters who falls in love with Navy nurse Mary Carter (Maureen O’Hara), which leaves his poor hometown sweetheart, Helene Hunt (Nancy Kelly) in the lurch. By the end of the film, Chris is one of the Few and the Proud as he and his buddies are shipped off to combat overseas.
