At the southern end of the Pennines lies the Peak District, an area of open moorland, limestone plateaux, fertile valleys, stately homes, enchanting market towns and picturesque villages. We begin our journey on the Huddersfield Line on a diesel unit as it runs up into the moorlands with just sheep and grouse for company before it plunges into the Standedge Tunnel. We then follow the Colne Valley into Huddersfield, a town with splendid Victorian architecture. From Huddersfield we take the Pennistone Line and head south on a Class 141 Leyland Railbus over the Denby Dale viaduct as it crosses the Dearne Valley. We then take time out for a ride through some superb scenery on the Kirklees Light Railway with its 15″ narrow-gauge rail. Back on the main line we now travel on the Manchester to Sheffield Line as it goes through the heart of the Peak District with stops at Edale, Peveril Castle and Chatsworth House, one of the grandest houses in England. On the Buxton line we get a chance to see the Bournemouth Belle in full steam, ready to depart for Matlock. Our final stop is the Crich Tramway Museum with its comprehensive collection of trams from around the world.
