In August 1944, Field Marshall Montgomery launched an audacious campaign to trap the German 5th and 7th Panzer Armies in Lower Normandy, forming a ring of steel around them with American, British, Canadian and Polish armour. The increasingly-encircled German forces, however, comprised some of the toughest and most battle-hardened units in Hitler’s Army – and what would become known as the ‘Falaise Gap’ became synonymous with carnage. This film tells the story of this important post-D-Day battle using frontline footage from both Allied and German camera crews, interviews with tank commanders and Typhoon strike aircraft pilots and newsreels, plus insights from military historian Jack Livesey.
