This film, made in 1939, before David Niven, its star, returned to Britain for war service, didn’t do well on its release, losing United Artists over $200,000. It has slipped into obscurity since, only recently re-appearing on DVD as a “Classic Film” archive release. You might, knowing this and reading the only other review so far, think it’s best avoided. However, it’s not that bad.It’s not great, by any means, but you could do worse.David Niven plays Tony, an illusionist who goes by the stage name of “The Great Arturo”. During one of his performances he meets Anita Halstead (Loretta Youing), who is engaged to the stuffy and none-too-bright Don Burns (Broderick Crawford). Tony and Anita fall head-over-heels in love with each other; she breaks her engagement and goes on the road with Tony, working as his assistant.All is fine for a while as they have a high old time touring the world and living out of suitcases, but Anita longs to settle down and raise a family. Tony finds this idea intolerable…
