Four friends, Johnny (Mekhi Phifer), his lover Gloria (Angelina Jolie), her brother Hayden (Ryan Slater) and Patty (Johnny Whitworth) decide to attempt a robbery to get drugs. But things do not go according to plan: Hayden is killed and Johnny gets caught. Five years on, when Hayden is released from prison he returns to his neighbourhood only to find that gossip has turned Gloria against him, believing him to be the murderer of her brother. Gloria has also vowed revenge and persuades Johnny – who as well as having an affair with Gloria is also seeing Gloria’s junkie mother (Rosanna Arquette) on the sly – to help plot Johnny’s killing.
