Triple-bill of romantic dramas. In ‘Hitch’ (2005), Will Smith plays Alex ‘Hitch’ Hitchens, a legendary – and deliberately anonymous – New York City ‘date doctor’ who, for a fee, has helped countless men woo the women of their dreams. While coaching Albert (Kevin James), a meek accountant who is smitten with a glamourous celebrity, Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta), Hitch finally meets his match in the person of the gorgeous, whip-smart Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a gossip columnist who follows Allegra’s every move. The ultimate professional bachelor, Hitch suddenly finds himself falling deliriously in love with Sara, a reporter whose biggest scoop could very well be the unmasking of Manhattan’s most famous date doctor. In ‘Jerry Maguire’ (1996), top sports manager Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is fired when he suggests to his employers SMI that they concentrate on caring more for fewer clients. He starts up his own company, with only two clients – one of whom double-crosses him by returning to SMI. However, Jerry still has American football player Ron Tidwell (an Oscar-winning Cuba Gooding Jr), plus the unlikely support of fellow former SMI employee Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), a single mother who Jerry begins dating. Finally, in the dark romantic drama ‘Closer’ (2004), two couples meet and fall in love before their lives intertwine, and their relationships disintegrate into deception and betrayal. Dan (Jude Law) is a writer in London who wants to finish a novel, but in the meantime supports himself by writing obituaries. One day he meets Alice (Natalie Portman), a beautiful American and they immediately fall for each other. Dan initially returns her affection but soon her neediness begins to wear on him. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who is hired to take a portrait of Dan for the dust jacket of his book. Dan becomes attracted to her but she soon meets Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist, and marries him. Dan can’t get Anna out of his mind even though she’s married, and the two become lovers, but Dan is frustrated by the fact that Anna is reluctant to leave Larry for him. Larry proves more brutal and pragmatic in these wars of the heart however, managing to retain Anna while tainting Dan’s relationship with Alice.
