BBC television adaptation of the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Young David Balfour (James Pearson) is told by his dying father that he has an inheritance to claim as the new Laird of Shaws, kept in trust for him by his estranged uncle Ebeneezer (Adrian Dunbar). Travelling to his new estate in Cramond, David is shocked to find his uncle an embittered and miserly man, and when he arranges for David to be kidnapped into a life of slavery by unscrupulous sailors, it is only the start of the young man’s adventures. When the ship picks up flamboyant, swashbuckling Jacobite rebel Alan Breck (Iain Glen), smuggling gold to the Scottish court in France, David has a chance to escape. Together, they travel across the Highlands, evading Redcoat patrols and mercenaries out to capture Alan for the murder of the notorious Red Fox, as Alan agrees to see David safely back to the Lowlands so he can reclaim his rightful inheritance.
