The Dead Of Winter
After the body of Dr Stephen Black is found on an Oxford tour bus, Lewis is surprised to learn that no-one remembers Black ever being on the bus. Sergeant Hathaway is tasked with retracing the sightseeing tour while Lewis visits Dr. Black’s home and discovers an answer machine message from a Francis Woodville. Lewis is worried about his partner – Hathaway has been giving evidence at a murder trial in which he found the remains of a 10 year old girl.
Dark Matter
Lewis and Hathaway are called to the Oxford University Observatory where the body of Andrew Crompton, amateur stargazer and Master of Gresham College, has been found at the foot of the stairs. Dr Hobson reveals that she had attended Gresham College the previous evening for an orchestra rehearsal. When a notebook is found near the body, Lewis and Hathaway visit Crompton’s wife Isobel who points them in the direction of Gwen Raeburn, senior lecturer in Astrophysics, and wife of the head of Hobson’s orchestra – Sir Arnold Raeburn.
Your Sudden Death Question
Lewis and Hathaway are called to Chaucer College during the August bank holiday weekend when the body of Ethan Croft is found floating in the college fountain. Hobson reveals that the victim had been attending a quiz weekend on the college grounds hosted by quiz aficionado Marcus Richards. Richards explains that there are twelve competitors taking part in the weekend, all of whom are hoping to take home the grand prize of £5,000.
Falling Darkness
It’s Halloween and Lewis and Hathaway are called out to the body of Professor Ligiea Willard, found with a stake through her heart. A traumatised Doctor Hobson arrives on the scene and reveals that Ligiea was an old university pal and they’d been due to meet for a drink along with another friend, Dr Ellen Jacoby, that very evening. Lewis and Hathaway then receive a visit from Ursula Van Tessel, a medium who claims to have foreseen Ligiea’s death.
