Written by and starring Chris O’Dowd, whose career has taken him thus far from The I.T. Crowd to Bridesmaids, amongst other stops, Moone Boy arrives on disc in the aftermath of heavy praise following its TV transmission.
It’s set in and around the area where O’Dowd grew up, and it’s thus perhaps no coincidence that Moone Bay is also described as ‘semi-autobiographical’. It certainly has the feeling of a project that someone is very vested in, and here, O’Dowd plays the imaginary friend of a young boy. Furthermore, he’s the imaginary friend of a young boy whose drawings have a habit of coming alive. It’s a very well handled setup, too, with the show both selling the concept and earning many good laughs. There are also welcome appearances from the likes of Steve Coogan, Johnny Vegas and Deirdre O’Kane, as well.
But it’s O’Dowd who particularly impresses here, in a show that’s far more ambitious than it may at first appear. Incorporating pieces of animation too, it’s a comedy with real heart to it, ripe for discovery on disc for those who missed it. The DVD also features a special glimpse behind the scenes, which is worth checking out. It’s the episodes you’ll be returning to time after time, though.
