The South Pole has lured scientists, adventures and eccentrics like a magnet, ever since EErnest Shackleton ventured there a century ago. Now, Encounters at the End of the World, sees renowed film maker, Werner Herzog, make his own South Pole exploration as he takes the viewer on a journey to the most remote location on the planet to observe the Anterctic community of Mcmurdo Station, on Ross Island, the headquarters for the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer. Beyond the settlement, he ventures through a science-fiction landscape, from the under-ice depths of the Ross Sea, to the brink of the Mount Erebus Volcano.
