The decomposed body of Diane Masters (Embeth Davidtz) is found in the boot of a car. She was the wife of famed criminal attorney Alan Masters (Treat Williams), and had been shot twice in the head. The policeman assigned to the case is Sergeant Jack Reed (Brian Dennehy), who suspects Masters of the murder, but soon realises that the suspect has powerful friends on all sides of the law. However, Reed refuses to be daunted by the power of the man he is investigating.
