Triple-bill of horror films. In ‘The Grudge’ (2004), based on the 2003 Japanese version, Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is an exchange student working for a Japanese medical centre. Covering for another nurse she attends to an old American woman, Emma, and while there unknowingly uncovers the source of a sinister curse. Each time the curse finds a new victim, it is reborn. Karen must somehow escape the fits of rage and madness to avoid certain death. In ‘Gothika’ (2003), Halle Berry plays Dr Miranda Grey, a criminal psychologist who awakens to find that she is a patient in the very institute where she formerly worked, with no memory of committing the murder of her husband and colleague, Dr Doug Grey (Charles S Dutton) of which she finds herself accused. Wondering if the nightmare that is unfolding might be linked to her clever, but deeply disturbed former patient Chloe (Penelope Cruz), Miranda tries to prove her sanity and innocence, but the doctor assigned to her case, Dr Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr) remains unconvinced by her pleas. Finally, in ‘Boogeyman’ (2005), Tim (Barry Watson) is a young man haunted by the memories of a horrific incident in his childhood home, in which his father was killed. Convinced that Tim’s memories of the mythic ‘Boogeyman’ are part of an elaborate psychological phobia, his psychiatrist sends him back to the house to confront his fears, reasoning that a night spent in his childhood bedroom will cure him. But when Tim realises that his memories were right all along, he finds himself trapped inside the house with the vicious supernatural killer and decides that he must fight his fears in a more literal manner than his psychiatrist intended.
