Eugene Irwin (Robert Redford) is a high-ranking officer in the US Army and the latest inmate to arrive at the military prison known as ‘the Castle’. The general feeling in the prison is one of cynicism and despondency, but Irwin refuses to be beaten by the situation and soon rallies his fellow inmates into rebuilding a historic wall in the prison yard.
