On 6 June 1944 – D-Day – came the culmination of nearly two years of planning by the Allied Forces, as ‘Operation Overlord’ resulted in the largest invasion force ever assembled. Using archive film of this momentous and audacious event, this programme tells the story of the conception, planning and execution of the Allies’ plan. It examines the technology used at the time, including the crucial air campaign that backed up the forces on the ground, and also shows what happened in the aftermath of the invasion.
